The study of floodplain meadows as a food base for farm animals

The reduction in the number of livestock in the private sector and small-scale farms has led to a lack of haymaking and insufficient pasture load, which gradually leads to the degradation and disappearance of floodplain meadows due to the formation of trees and shrubs (Salicaceae) on them. We have studied the vegetation of the floodplain meadows of the Tobol River (the forest-steppe part of the current). In the course of the research, 19 plant associations were identified, which occupy habitats in a clear dependence on the meso- and macrorelief and growing conditions. The leading families with the highest species diversity include 8: Poaceae, Fabaceae, Asteraceae or Compositae, Plantaginaceae, Cyperaceae, Rubiaceae, Rosaceae, Poligonaceae. With high fodder qualities, such plant associations as meadow-foxtail, campfire and sedge-grass are noted. The assessment of the condition of the meadows made it possible to give some recommendations for their maintenance and improvement.
